In 2002, The SEC's Division of Corporation Finance published the results of a study which concluded that the Management's Discussion and Analysis sections of Fortune 500 companies' periodic reports typically included "boilerplate analyses that did not provide any insight into the companies' past performance or business prospects." Subsequent speeches by SEC Commissioner Cynthia Glassman, and related pressure from institutional investors, have urged companies to provide more forward-looking information to investors.
