Mary Spearing is a partner in the Washington D.C. office of Baker Botts L.L.P, specializing in white collar defense and corporate investigations and compliance. Ms. Spearing has been with Baker Botts since 1998. Prior to coming to Baker Botts she had an extensive career with the U.S. Department of Justice, beginning in 1981 as an Assistant U.S. Attorney and concluding as Chief of the Fraud Section of the Department’s Criminal Division until 1998. Her work as a federal prosecutor involved trying over 35 jury trials, numerous Courts of Appeals arguments, grand jury investigations and supervision of major white collar fraud cases around the country.
Ms. Spearing’s areas of expertise include, among others, securities enforcement, Foreign Corrupt Practices Act cases, environmental crime and health care fraud. Her clients have included corporations, audit committees, officers, and directors in criminal regulatory and investigative matters. Her representations often involve government investigations and she has been hired by audit committees and special committees of public companies to conduct internal investigations concerning allegations of wrongdoing. She has represented public companies in a variety of industries--including energy, pharmaceutical, and healthcare--in defending and negotiating with the government. Ms. Spearing has handled FCPA investigations in several countries and has provided advice and counseling regarding company practices and compliance programs.
Ms. Spearing has been listed repeatedly in The Super Lawyers, The Best Lawyers in America, The International Who’s Who of Business Lawyers, Washingtonian Magazine, and the Washington Post, as a leading expert in her field.
