Bad law makes for difficult compliance

In the dead of night last Friday, the U.S. Senate passed a version of the U.S. Tax Cuts and Jobs Act, a piece of legislation that is, to say the very least, politically charged and highly controversial.

Compliance Week is not a forum for political debate. It’s a forum for discussing best practices in corporate compliance, ethics, integrity, sustainability, and risk management. And even in an editorial such as my own, it’s still not an ideal place to discuss political opinions because it’s not exactly going to drive forward the much more important conversation about how compliance and ethics officers can better understand their risks, better practice their craft, and better serve their organizations.
