Walmart Centralizes Compliance Department, Hires Global Chief Compliance Officer

Jaclyn Jaeger | October 26, 2012

Still picking up the pieces following allegations of a massive bribery and corruption scheme at its Mexico operations, Walmex, retail giant Walmart this week said in a company-wide memo that it plans to significantly revamp its compliance department.

Effective Dec. 1, Walmart's compliance, ethics, investigations and legal departments will become one organization, answering to Executive Vice President, General Counsel and Corporate Secretary Jeff Gearhart.

Walmart also said in the memo dated Oct. 24 that it has hired Jay Jorgensen, currently a partner at Sidley Austin, as senior vice president and global chief compliance officer. Prior to Sidley Austin, Jorgensen was a law clerk for former U.S. Supreme Court Chief Justice William Rehnquist and for then Judge Samuel Alito at the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Third Circuit. Jorgensen will assume his new role at Walmart Dec. 3.

Jorgensen's appointment follows the recent hiring of Daniel Trujillo to assume the newly-created role of senior vice president and chief compliance officer for retail giant Walmart International, effective Oct. 29.  Trujillo currently is deputy general counsel and director of compliance at oilfield services company Schlumberger.
