Dan Chapman talks FCPA investigations

Tom Fox | November 5, 2018

Welcome to Compliance Week’s “Top Minds in Compliance” podcast—our weekly conversation with a leader in the compliance field. This week, columnist Tom Fox chats with Dan Chapman, legal counsel and a former chief compliance officer in the energy space. Chapman is currently the CEO of his own consulting firm: Presyse - Compliance Systems and Expertise.

Chapman discusses how to approach an Foreign Corrupt Practices Act investigation and remediation during that investigation. He relates the psychology of a company in the context of an FCPA enforcement case to the five stages of grief that individuals go through—denial, anger, bargaining, depression, and acceptance—and explains the effect an investigation has on the day-to-day operations and top management of the company. Chapman also details how a compliance officer can help the company come out stronger at the end of the FCPA process.
