Dr. Kurt Michels Q&A: Building a better compliance program

As Volkswagen AG contends with its diesel emissions crisis, it has embarked on a complete overhaul of its compliance program. But to lead it, it needed an experienced automotive compliance expert who knew what it was like to help guide a company through tough times. For Volkswagen and its new head of integrity and legal affairs, Hiltrud Werner, the person to turn to was Dr. Kurt Michels.

Michels, an experienced attorney and expert in automotive sector compliance issues, had spent some 20 years at Daimler AG, most recently as its chief compliance officer for Trucks, Vans & Buses. During the company’s 2010-2013 monitorship over an FCPA violation, Michels worked closely with U.S. authorities to ensure the compliance provisions of its deferred prosecution agreement were met.
