Coffin on Compliance: Romania's pushback against corruption

Recently in Romania, we saw an extraordinary act of public pushback against government corruption. Romanian lawmakers moved to decriminalize certain acts of corruption under a specific monetary threshold, describing the matter as one of constitutionality. The public, however, wasn’t having it. Not only would the law essentially give lawmakers carte blanche to commit low-level corruption, it would also let this new law’s chief proponent off the hook for an ongoing corruption investigation. Outraged, the people of Romania took to the streets, and eventually they would get their leaders to abandon the law. Sometimes compliance comes at you from below, rather than above. Here is a look at the implications of those protests while they happened.
