The EU Parliament has agreed to simplify European chemicals regulations to boost
competitiveness, but compliance teams should note that the Members of the European Parliment (MEPs) voted to retain some rules to protect consumers and the environment. Lawyers have also warned that while the EU may be reducing requirements, some individual states are introducing national restrictions.
Compliance teams in the chemical sector, their suppliers and their end-users should
also watch developments around PFAS, the synthetic chemicals known as “forever
chemicals” for their persistence in water, soil and in human bodies. The EU has banned increasing numbers of specific PFAS in recent years, and more sweeping
reforms are expected later this year.
