The European Anti-Fraud Office (OLAF) more than doubled the number of cases it closed in the past year while reducing the average duration of those cases.

The agency’s 2012 annual report, released this week, revealed OLAF closed 465 cases in 2012, compared to 208 in 2011. During that time period the average duration of an investigation dropped by 22 percent, from 29.1 months in 2011 to 22.6 in 2012. The selection phase also was shaved by 80 percent, from 6.8 months to 1.4 months. Officials said the volume of information forwarded to the agency has increased steadily, mainly from private sources.
