California Governor Gavin Newsom has issued an executive order to explore whether companies should develop a “kill switch” for any potentially harmful AI tech they develop.

The move is part of an effort to address the federal government’s “abject failure to create any form of meaningful AI oversight or accountability,” his office said in a press release.
