The Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) has too many vacancies following efforts by the Trump administration to reduce the overall size of the federal government, SEC Chair Paul Atkins told Congress Tuesday.

Atkins spoke to an appropriations panel as the House builds its federal budget proposal for fiscal year 2026. Each spring, the president and each chamber of Congress create their own budget bills, and in a series of votes, Congress approves a final budget for the fiscal year that begins Oct. 1.

The budget bill is separate from the tax bill currently under debate in the House.
