Burford Capital, a litigation finance company, has appointed Charles Utley as chief accounting officer.

Utley joins Burford’s 12-person finance and accounting organization and will continue to develop its approach to controls, financial structuring, and technical accounting in this emerging industry. He was previously a managing director at Barclays, where he spent 11 years in a variety of senior accounting roles, including head of technical accounting for the Americas and head of product control valuation for the Americas.

He led the technical accounting and product control teams at Barclays which looked after the firm’s legacy assets that were impacted by the financial crisis. These included structured products, private equity and real estate. Before Barclays, Utley spent eight years at PricewaterhouseCoopers, rising to the level of director, with a particular focus on complex accounting in the financial sector.

Utley's appointment is the latest in a series of C-Suite appointments and new hires at Burford, including the appointment of Elizabeth O’Connell as CFO and Mark Klein as general counsel.
