The European Union issued significant antitrust fines against two tech titans, hitting Apple with 500 million euros (U.S. $570 million) and Facebook owner Meta with 200 million euros (U.S. $228 million). The move sought to undermine key parts of both companies’ businesses less than a month after President Donald Trump announced a plan for worldwide trade tariffs.

The EU said its fines, levied under the Digital Markets Act, targeted Apple’s App Store rules for developers and Meta’s personalized ads technologies. But they also come as U.S. officials are negotiating wide-ranging global trade tariffs Trump announced on April 2. Commissioners reportedly delayed Wednesday’s announcement following a series of meetings between officials from both regions last week, according to the Wall Street Journal.
