Insurance firm Markel Corp. announced Julia Chu has been appointed chief risk officer.

In this new position, Chu will be responsible for Markel’s enterprise risk management, capital planning, and ceded reinsurance placements. Each of these functions serve a critical role in managing insurance risk, and their combination under Chu’s leadership is designed to promote Markel’s strategy of efficiently utilizing capital to create value for customers and shareholders.

Chu has been chief global ceded reinsurance partner at Markel since March 2018, according to her LinkedIn profile. As chief risk officer, she will report to Chief Financial Officer Jeremy Noble.
