Cryptocurrency platform BitMEX has hired Marcus Hughes as chief risk officer.

In this role, Hughes will serve on the executive board, with responsibility for BitMEX’s regulatory affairs, risk, legal, and compliance functions. He will report directly to Chief Executive Alexander Höptner.

Hughes will guide the company’s legal strategy, lead engagement with regulators and policymakers around the world, and build out BitMEX’s risk framework and compliance program.

Prior to joining BitMEX, he was managing director of Coinbase’s European business, where he worked closely with product teams to build and scale the business as well as establish and develop relationships with regulators across the world. Prior to joining Coinbase, Hughes spent almost a decade at Morgan Stanley.

BitMEX’s former chief compliance officer, Malcolm Wright, recently left the company to join Shyft Network.
