Newmont Corp., a gold mining company, announced the promotion of Peter Toth to chief strategy and sustainability officer.

Toth, who will succeed retiring Chief Sustainability and External Affairs Officer Stephen Gottesfeld, began his tenure at Newmont in October 2021 as executive vice president, strategic development.

Previously, Toth served as group executive, strategy and development of Rio Tinto, overseeing strategy, sustainability, and portfolio transformation efforts. He joined Rio Tinto in 2014 as global head of strategy and became head of corporate development in 2015.

He brings 25 years of industry experience as a leader in sustainable and responsible mining and considers environmental, social, and governance (ESG) practices fundamental to operations.

Gottesfeld joined Newmont in 1997 as senior counsel and served on multiple executive leadership teams and as the company’s general counsel for more than 10 years before taking over sustainability, external relations, and communications functions in 2019.
