Olympus, a global medical device company based in Tokyo, Japan, announced the promotions of two senior level positions in the company's compliance and legal departments.

Caroline West has been appointed as global chief compliance officer. She is promoted to this global position from her current role of chief compliance officer of Olympus Corporation of the Americas (OCA), a distributor of endoscopes and related equipment and a wholly-owned subsidiary of  Olympus.

She will report to Hiro Sasa, president and representative director of Olympus Corporation. West will manage a staff in Tokyo and the company's regional compliance departments to continue to enhance the company's global compliance programs.

Donna Miller has been appointed as Olympus' head of HQ legal and global general counsel. She is being promoted to this global position from her current role of general counsel of OCA. Miller will report to Kiichi Hirata, chief administrative officer at the corporation's headquarters in Tokyo.

She also will continue to serve as general counsel for OCA, initially dividing her time evenly between her current and new positions. She will be supported by the global headquarters and regional legal departments to manage the global and regional responsibilities respectively. Miller joined Olympus in 2006.

In March, OCA agreed to pay $623.2 million to the government to resolve criminal charges and civil claims relating to a scheme to pay kickbacks to doctors and hospitals—the largest total amount paid in U.S. history for violations involving the Anti-Kickback Statute by a medical device company.
