In the latest Compliance Week podcast, we talk to Rafi Azim-Khan, partner and head of data privacy, Europe, for the international law firm Pillsbury Winthrop Shaw Pittman about what international crackdowns and partnerships regarding data privacy may affect companies.

Azim-Khan was recently in Washington, D.C. for the announcement of a new data privacy initiative joined by regulators in North America, Europe and Asia. It is aimed at assisting international businesses with increasingly complex global data privacy laws and increasing enforcement risks.

A backdrop to all this is that the EU and the U.S. have squabbled among rover data protect in recent months, with the former proposing new "atomic weapon" fines of as much as 5 percent of global revenue for non-compliance as part of new regulatory proposals. Asia is also on the cusp of adopting tougher EU-style laws.

Azim-Kahn gives his perspective on the new joint data privacy initiative and what companies in the U.S. should know.
