Regulators on a state, federal, and international level are stepping up scrutiny of online data privacy practices, elevating the need for companies to reassess their privacy policies.
Historically, regulators have taken a reactive approach to data privacy issues related to Websites and mobile applications, generally waiting for an incident—such as a leak of consumer credit card data—before taking any action, says Lynn Percival, an associate with law firm Poyner Spruill. Over the last few months, however, “state, federal, and international bodies have become a lot more proactive in policing these things,” he says.
