Embattled Japanese-based airbag supplier Takata has named Bruce Angiolillo as general counsel of TK Holdings, the North American subsidiary of Takata, effective Jan. 1, 2015.

Angiolillo joins Takata following a 34-year career at global law firm Simpson Thacher & Bartlett. While at Simpson Thacher, Angiolillo led the firm’s securities litigation practice.

As general counsel of TK Holdings, Angiolillo will oversee all North American legal and regulatory matters at the company and work directly with Takata’s senior management, external legal counsel and the company’s governing bodies. He will play an integral role in Takata’s continued efforts to work cooperatively with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) and other regulators to resolve all outstanding issues related to the safety campaigns associated with certain Takata airbag inflators.

As Compliance Week previously reported, Takata has been under fire from NHTSA and Congress after several automakers began issuing recalls over defective airbags that can inflate violently, ripping from their brackets and causing an explosion of shrapnel. Auto companies affected include GM, Toyota, Honda, Mazda, BMW, Nissan, Mitsubishi, Subaru, Chrysler, and Ford.
