About 83 percent of data breaches are perpetrated by external bad actors and not employees, contractors, or other people within organizations, according to the latest research.
The “Verizon 2023 Data Breach Investigations Report” analyzed 16,312 security incidents that occurred between Nov. 1, 2021, and Oct. 31, 2022, of which 5,199 were confirmed data breaches.
About 70 percent of all external actors behind the breaches were with organized crime, according to the report, which is based on information from Verizon Threat Research Advisory Center investigators, reports provided by data contributors, and publicly disclosed incidents. Verizon collaborated with MITRE Engenuity and the Center for Threat-Informed Defense on the report.
