Google allegedly collected personal data from mobile devices without permission, violating California privacy laws. A jury found the company liable and awarded more than $425.6 million to class-action plaintiffs.

The suit against Google (Rodriguez v. Google LLC, 20-cv-4688-RS), filed in 2020 in U.S. District Court for the Northern District of California, aimed at options available on phones, in the “apps” settings, which appeared to allow users to opt out of having their data collected by Google, according to the Fourth amended complaint.
