Voya Financial announced this week that it has appointed Trish Walsh as chief legal officer, effective Sept. 14.

In this role, Walsh will oversee all aspects of Voya's law, compliance and external affairs department, serving as an advisor to senior management and the board of directors on legal, compliance, securities and corporate governance matters. Walsh will report to Voya's chairman and CEO, Rodney Martin, and serve on the company's executive committee.

Walsh joins Voya from Cigna, a global health service company, where she served as deputy general counsel and global chief compliance officer since 2012. In this role, she oversaw a number of key risk mitigation strategies and represented the company with state and federal regulators. She joined Cigna in 2011 as chief counsel for its U.S. healthcare business.

From 2002 to 2011, Walsh held several roles at Massachusetts Mutual Life Insurance Company. Most recently, she was senior vice president and chief of staff to the CEO and was responsible for ensuring that key strategic initiatives received the resources and direction required for successful completion. She also previously served as senior vice president and deputy general counsel for the company.

Prior to joining MassMutual, Walsh was an associate at Cleary, Gottlieb, Steen & Hamilton and also worked as a staff attorney at the SEC. She began her career with clerkships at the U.S. District Court for the District of Connecticut and the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Eleventh Circuit.
