Robert Bostrom, who was named chief legal and compliance officer and corporate secretary for Pier 1 Imports this time last year, has passed away.

Veta Richardson, president and CEO of the Association of Corporate Counsel, announced Bostrom’s passing in a LinkedIn post on Jan. 23. “His positive impact on our lives, the legal profession and business community will be felt for many years to come,” Richardson wrote. The post was immediately followed by an outpouring of support from several in the legal and compliance community.

Bostrom joined Pier 1 Imports in January 2019 from clothing retailer Abercrombie & Fitch (A&F), where he was general counsel, as well as senior vice president and corporate secretary from January 2014 to September 2018. It was under Bostrom’s leadership that A&F developed its corporate compliance program.

In addition to A&F, other in-house roles held by Bostrom included general counsel and corporate secretary at Freddie Mac from February 2006 to July 2011 and general counsel at National Westminster Bancorp from 1992 to 1996. He also spent several years in private practice, including stints at Greenberg Traurig and Winston & Strawn.

A thought leader in his field, including for Compliance Week, Bostrom was admired by peers, colleagues, and friends alike. Described best by Richardson as “a great leader, diversity champion, friend, colleague, and just all around wonderful human being,” he will be sorely missed.
