Without any official announcement, Pier 1 Imports has named Ray McKown as its new general counsel and corporate secretary, days before the home furnishings and decor company filed for bankruptcy.

McKown’s appointment follows the sudden death of previous general counsel and corporate secretary Robert Bostrom in January.

McKown became senior vice president, general counsel and corporate secretary of the company on Feb. 12, the company said on the management page of its website. Previously, McKown served as assistant secretary of Pier 1 from October 2018 to February 2020. He has served in the general counsel’s office in various capacities since 2005, including vice president and associate general counsel; senior corporate counsel; and corporate counsel.

On Feb. 17, Pier 1 announced it is pursuing to sell the company and has commenced voluntary Chapter 11 proceedings in the U.S. Bankruptcy Court for the Eastern District of Virginia. The company said it also intends to use this process to complete the previously announced closure of up to 450 store locations, including the closure of all its stores in Canada.
