The Securities and Exchange Commission strengthened its chief accounting office Tuesday, announcing the additions of John Vanosdall and Paul Munter as deputy chief accountants.

Vanosdall and Munter will work under SEC Chief Accountant Sagar Teotia, who assumed his post in July.

Munter will serve as deputy in the office’s international matters, while Vanosdall will lead the activities of the office’s accounting group. Munter previously served as an academic fellow at the SEC and joins the regulator after recently retiring from KPMG, where he worked as the lead technical partner for the U.S. firm’s international accounting and International Financial Reporting Standards (IFRS) activities.

“I am truly grateful that Paul has agreed to return to the Office of the Chief Accountant to play a key role on international matters,” Teotia said in a news release. “As many know, international matters are an area of critical focus and significant priority to our office. Paul’s extensive background in various international areas will be extremely valuable as we continue to advance improvements in international accounting and auditing matters.”

Vanosdall joins from PwC, where he was a partner in the firm’s mergers and acquisitions practice. He previously served as a professional accounting fellow in the Office of the Chief Accountant.

“I am appreciative and very excited that John has agreed to return to the Office of the Chief Accountant to oversee the accounting group,” said Teotia in a separate release. “John’s diverse experiences in public accounting and as a professional accounting fellow at the SEC combined with his deep technical knowledge on accounting matters will be extremely valuable as we work closely with various stakeholders on challenging accounting and disclosure matters.”

The Office of the Chief Accountant is responsible for accounting and auditing matters arising in the Commission’s administration of federal securities laws.
