The property and casualty insurance arm of USAA appointed Joseph Gates as senior vice president and chief risk officer.

Previously, Gates served as chief risk officer and enterprise catastrophe management director at American Family Insurance for more than eight years.

He also previously served as vice president, catastrophe management at Homesite Insurance for more than two years and head of global catastrophe modeling and reporting at Allianz Global Corporate & Specialty for five years.
