Businesses operating in Virginia are barred from selling consumers’ precise location data, under legislation signed into law Tuesday by Gov. Abigail Spanberger.
The bill (S.B. 338), which amends the Virginia Consumer Data Protection Act, takes effect on July 1. It bans the sale of personal data for money, but data is allowed to be shared among parties under some circumstances, according to the bill. Certain organizations and businesses are exempted from the restrictions and are allowed to collect and sell data if it helps to prevent illegal activity, fraud, and security incidents.
