The Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) has too many vacancies following efforts by the Trump administration to reduce the overall size of the federal government, SEC Chair Paul Atkins told Congress Tuesday.
Atkins spoke to the panel, led by Dave Joyce (R-Ohio) and ranking member Steny Hoyer (D-Md.), as the House builds its federal budget proposal for fiscal year 2026. Each spring, the president and each chamber of Congress create their own budget bills, and in a series of votes, Congress approves a final budget for the fiscal year that begins Oct. 1. The budget bill is separate from the tax bill currently under debate in the House.
Tens of thousands of federal employees have left their jobs in 2025 under various programs and efforts by President Donald Trump to slash the size of the federal workforce and to cut what he has described as “bloated” federal programs, the New York Times has reported.
