The 3M Company paid more than $18.7 billion in penalties over four years, more than any other major U.S. company tracked in a new survey.
Corporations were issued more than 180,000 fines in the U.S. totaling $354 billion between 2020 and 2024, according to The Protecht Group, which conducted the survey, using state and federal data from the Good Jobs First Violation Tracker.
The 3M Company paid 48 fines during the four years, including one for $12.5 billion in 2024, related to allegations that its PFAS chemicals contaminated the drinking water of thousands of people. The 3M Company paid $6 billion in 2023 to settle allegations that its earplugs failed to protect the hearing of hundreds of thousands of servicemembers.
