President Barack Obama has nominated Sharon Bowen, a securities lawyer, to the Commodity Futures Trading Commission. Pending Senate confirmation, she would succeed departed Commissioner Bart Chilton, a Democrat whose tenure was defined by his staunch support of tough, comprehensive regulations for banks and the swaps marketplace.

Bowen, a partner in the New York office of Latham & Watkins, represents corporations, private equity firms, and financial and institutional clients. Appointed by the Obama Administration, she currently serves as acting chair of the board of directors for the Securities Investor Protection Corporation, which helps recover money to investors with assets in the hands of bankrupt and financially troubled brokerage firms. She also serves as a member of the Emeritus Board of Directors of New York Lawyers for the Public Interest and on the New York City Economic Development Corporation.
