The Food and Drug Administration has proposed a new rule that would require shippers, receivers, and carriers to take added steps to prevent the contamination of human and animal food supplies during transportation. The proposal is the seventh and final major rule of the FDA’s Food Safety Modernization Act, a framework of preventive measures, safety requirements, and anti-terrorism measures for the nation’s food system.

โ€œWe are now one step closer to fully implementing the comprehensive regulatory framework for prevention that will strengthen the FDA’s inspection and compliance tools, modernize oversight of the nation’s food safety system, and prevent foodborne illnesses before they happen,โ€ said Michael Taylor, the FDA’s deputy commissioner for foods and veterinary medicine in a statement.
