CVS has vowed to appeal $948.8 million in fines and damages imposed by a judge Tuesday on its Omnicare unit, for billing Medicare for tens of thousands of false claims.

The lawsuit, first filed in 2015 by whistleblower Uri Bassan, a former Omnicare pharmacist, alleges that Omnicare massively overbilled the government by continuing to submit claims for reimbursement for prescriptions that had long expired and through other means. The Department of Justice has led the case since intervening in 2019. CVS purchased Omnicare in 2015.
