When it comes to corporate sustainability, $5.9 billion mailstream technology company Pitney Bowes knows the ropes.

Founded 87 years ago, the Stamford, Conn.-based company has a long history of environmental consciousness. Paul Robbertz, the company’s vice president of environmental health and safety, likes to say sustainability has always been “part of the core value of the company going back through several generations of CEOs and leaders.” In 1980, management formalized that effort by establishing a corporate responsibility committee. Its purview: “citizenship, philanthropy, community involvement, and sustainability,” Robbertz says.
