Morrison & Foerster Partners John Carlin and David Newman have been named to “Day One” Department of Justice leadership roles, the law firm announced.

Carlin will serve as acting deputy attorney general until the Senate confirmation of Lisa Monaco, after which he will assume the role of principal associate deputy attorney general. Newman will hold the title of associate deputy attorney general, and his duties will cover national security, cyber-security, and crisis management, Morrison & Foerster said.

Prior to joining Morrison & Foerster in 2017, Carlin served as former assistant attorney general for the Department of Justice’s National Security Division, a role in which he oversaw nearly 400 employees responsible for protecting the nation against terrorism, espionage, cyber, and other national security threats. He also served as former chief of staff to then-FBI Director Robert Mueller, where he helped lead the FBI’s evolution to meet growing and changing national security threats, including cyber-threats.

Newman, who also joined Morrison & Foerster in 2017, previously held several key posts at the White House, including serving as special assistant and associate counsel to President Barack Obama and in multiple positions on the staff of the National Security Council.
