Scandinavia’s biggest banking group, Nordea, has appointed Helene Jepson as chief compliance officer and head of group compliance, effective Sept. 1.

Her appointment was announced June 24, the same month the bank confirmed in response to media reports that its Copenhagen office was raided by Danish police as part of an ongoing investigation into alleged money laundering at the firm involving former customers of its international branch.

The search by the Danish State Prosecutor for Serious Economic and International Crime (SØIK) over questions regarding Nordea’s anti-money laundering compliance took place on June 12, but the bank did not publicly acknowledge the raid until June 17.

“We have been building a strong compliance function as a strategic priority for the bank, and Helene has the right background and skills to take this forward,” said Nordea’s Chief Risk Officer, Head of Risk & Compliance, Matthew Elderfield, whom Jepson will report to.

Jepson is currently chief compliance officer at First Republic Bank, a U.S. bank and wealth management company, where she is responsible for its compliance program.
