The European Stability Mechanism (ESM) appointed João Gião as its general counsel, effective April 1. He will assume the role of acting general counsel on Jan. 1.

Gião will also join the management board.

He joined the European Financial Stability Facility, ESM’s predecessor, in 2011. Then, he was a management board member of the Portuguese Securities Market Commission. He returned to the ESM as senior advisor to the general counsel and was also acting head of the legal and procurement division.
